God’s preferential option for the poor

Liberation Theology has been criticised for being too heavily influenced by Marxism. But all theologies are influenced by context, and it is just as valid to accuse evangelical fundamentalists of being influenced by Capitalism. It could be argued that the more scripturally consistent side to choose is the side of the poor and oppressed, which is the basis for Liberation Theology.

Christians all agree that charity is an integral part of their ministry. Still, the Liberation Theologians go further and call Christians to peacefully but actively oppose the social institutions that are the basis for poverty and oppression. This has brought Liberation Theologians in conflict with those social institutions and the governments that seek to maintain them.

Liberation Theology is about liberating the oppressed rather than just providing for their immediate needs. I support this approach, although the root causes of poverty/oppression and the consequent social changes to fight for are contested. Some Christians in first-world countries would argue that Capitalist growth is a solution to poverty in their society, so their solution is the antithesis of the liberationist praxis. I will add here that capitalist growth has been demonstrated to be ineffective in relieving oppression as it tends to reward power. Liberation Theology views poverty and powerlessness from the perspective of the poor rather than the powerful and wealthy, making it a more valid theological context.
